Brian Holman joins the faculty of the Accademia Vocale Lorenzo Malfatti in Lucca, Italy for the summer of 2017. A four week vocal intensive for young singers in Tuscany, with public concerts in the town of Lucca, birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, as well as the mountain hamlet of Celle, the ancestral home of the Puccini musical dynasty.
Lorenzo Malfatti was born in Pittsburgh to Lucchese parents, and studied singing with Mack Harrell and Giuseppe De Luca at Juilliard after being discovered by Lily Pons, who heard him sing while on active duty in the Far East during World War II. He later went on to a celebrating teaching career at the University of Cincinnati, and his students included David Daniels, David Malis, Marie McLaughlin, and Frank D’Ambrosio. The Instituto is a continuation of the former Opera Theater of Lucca, originally founded by Malfatti and director Malcolm Fraser with the sponsorship of the University of Cincinatti. Today, Benjamin Wayne Smith of University of Memphis directs the program, with the support of the Comune di Lucca, Lucchesi nel mondo, and Fondazione Banca del Monte.
